My world

I have another sweetie in my household, he is a wonderful young man, loads of energy, and loves to play. On day one, he got along with my pit bull Dixie and my St. Bernard Riese. What a loving Pit Bull he is, He will be on the Sibley/Renville County Humane Societies website Friday. He is full of life, very happy, and wants to make friends with everyone, and will be a wonderful companion. He loves to retrieve and run like crazy.

Thanks John. Leo the red/brown brindle I am a bit worried about, he is new here, from a surrender, and while here, he broke his chain, he is not aggressive in any way towards me or my dogs, but he is towards cats, I cannot in all confidence get him adopted out through our humane society. I am calling around trying to find a program that may be able to re-home him, and work with him a bit. I have him trained already to sit, stay, and kennel up. do you have any suggestions ?

Posts deleted - no need for that, and this isn't the place. Joe and Lisa, let's work together to get this dog another chance. Focus on thinking of options for the dog, because that's what needs to happen.

Hello Roo and Joey, I agree, Leo is a sweetie, I am trying so hard to keep my sanity throughout this deal, I do not want to be attacked here or anywhere, nor do I deserve it. Leo was a special case, I usually only get dogs from rescue, shelters, or humane societies, after they have been up to date on their shots, and altered, and especially after they were assessed for behaviors. Leo was a special case, Joe was a long time friend, and had to move, unfortunately he was given to me at the last minute, and I don't think there was allot of time spent trying to place him. So I took him as a direct surrender, going by what was told to me, and I still took precautions, Because he did what he did, It is my obligation to inform anyone that I speak with, it is not a slam to leo, its my responsibility. I called all over, I emailed Rottie Lov, contacted countless rescues and places that deal with the breed, and no luck. I called Joe and informed him that I am trying. Leo thrived in his stay here, I had him healing, sitting, staying, and gained respect, he stopped jumping up and actually did very will with me, and my dogs. But my job is to make everyone here safe, and to be able to take in dogs that needs a chance, and I cannot do that if I have a unaltered, aggressive male here. I tried to help, and I feel bad enough. The information about Joe letting leo chase rabbits down was not given to me on my pre-assessment with Joe about leo, had I known that, I would have thought twice, my barn cats are like my outdoor pets, they have a purpose and job to do here, and you grow attached, she also had babies that were not weaned, and graciously, the SCHS, took them in and fostered them out to homes that can bottle feed them, so that made me feel allot better.

It is your responsibility to let people know about Leo, but just because he killed a cat doesn't mean we should necessarily label him as generally aggressive. He's not good with cats, just like thousands and thousands of other dogs out there. Dogs are predators that instictively chase and kill things such as cats, rabbits, squirrels, etc. I'm not saying it's a good thing when it happens, but honestly, I don't see a huge deal with the fact that Leo has issues with cats. Leo sounds to be great with people and the fact that he's good with other dogs is a big bonus. He's not an "aggressive" dog, he just needs to go to a home that doesn't have cats, that's all. That shouldn't rule all options out for him, but it will if you're going around using the aggression term. Just something to keep in mind. Are you willing to do a trade at all where you take a dog from somebody else if they can take Leo? That may help open up some options for him.

Joe, I have been telling you that "animal and cat aggression is the label" and he has been labeled with it. From this experience, you and I have both learned a very valuable lesson, I for one, to always go with my gut experience, and also I never under estimate any animal or anyone. I have said over and over, he is good with my dogs and very good with me, so now that we have that clear, I still have him, I didn't have the heart to do anything because I know he is a great dog, and full of love, but I have told you again and again, over the past week, if you want to come and get him, and take time to really get him a home, do so, then if you try with all your heart, and it doesn't work, then at least he will be with his family when certain choices have to be made. I offered to bring him into town, you can meet me in White Bear if you wish, but I am not going to keep pushing things off. Then after this is done, we'll be done. I did this for Leo, because I love these dogs endlessly and I am very hurt by what you have been saying and doing to me. I understand your position, that is why I called you that day, to give you options first, and tell you what my responsibilities are. My cousin is going to work with me and my other animals temperarily, so that they don't have to be neglected, so if you know someone that will take him, or if you want to come and get him, then you have my number. no more negative comments on my board and page, focus on Leo, and communicate with me about what you want to do. I am going to say that Leo has another week here at my home, so by next Saturday we have to come up with a solution.

Joe- What type of licking? Licking his paws or objects like a blanket? That issue sometimes has as easy fix..

(EDIT: I wrote this before reading you have 1 week with him)
Lisa - As far as re-training obsession with other animals, Do you know if he has actually got another animal before, like cat or squirrel? If so you will have to be a little more strict on re-directing the action. (nobody crusify me, Its just MY opinion remember)
As I have said here before, every action has a cause and effect, instead of bassing your worries on the effect (chasing/attacking cats) you need to re establish a new cause (creating a habit, redirecting instinct), then give it a new effect (LLOTTTSSS of praise).
A good way to start, (wether a cainine has killed or not) is with stuffed toys. Some dogs really dont like to even see the eyes of a plush toy, or hearing the meow sound sets them off. You can try over a few weeks giving re-direction to the basic instincts before even bringing real species into the equation.
(EDIT:obviously quicker methods and recovery needs to be achieved for this case, Im going to read up what I can in my notes)
The main thing is even trying with species on species contact, when one is instinctually agressive, its more stressful for the counterpart than to cainine(for example) or owner/trainer. When one animal can sence the natural instincts arent there the problems begin to help fixing themselfs. I can elaborate, I dont know how much your intrested in, so I wont write a novel.. Let me know, Im happy to help with anything if I can.
