That is so sweet! It looks just like my Zoey sleeping....must have her head on a pillow! Sometimes I swear she forgets she is a dog, and thinks she is a person =)
I think that is great that you are bringing KIND News into classrooms in your community. I work at a humane society in Oregon as the Humane Educator, and we sponsor 62 classrooms in our area. I sent a survey out to Teachers whose classrooms we spons…
I work at a small No-Kill Humane Society. After hearing about Wallace from my director I was inspired to foster a 4 week old pitbull puppy. After placing him in a home, and learning even more about the breed, I decided at an American Pit Bull Terrier was the dog for me. I adopted Zoey in July of 2008, and she is the love of my life. I get to take her to work with me every day, and I have started to teach her frisbee! I am training her now to go through Therapy Dog Certification, and she will be the Education Dog for our shelter. My goal is to use her to teach kids not only about dogs, but that Pits are not mean and scary dogs as they are often portrayed as well. You can check out the website for my Humane Society by visiting the link to my website!
Hi Stephanie, Mom and I are TDI certified and so is my brother Toby. I thought it was great fun to visit about 6-8 fourth grade classes with my other TDI pit bull buddies. Hope we do it again. I do a kissing booth sometimes too. Did mom tell you that? Sometimes she repeats herself gushing about us. I think she is getting forgetful but that's okay.
Hi Stephanie:
That's the link to the SPCA for Monterey County's Pit Bull 101 class. We teach the basics: attention to owner, sit, stay, down, recall, etc. As class progresses, we do controlled meets at a distance, continually caution owners to break the dogs' stares. We set up stations where the dogs perform an activity ("leave it", "sit" ,etc.), then move to the next station. We practice walks in groups, and the last day of class is agility day with stations, jumps, etc.
It is so much fun...I love being a volunteer for this class especially because I love pits and Amanda, the SPCA behaviorist/trainer is wonderful to work with.
The class was developed for pit bulls / pit mixes only because there is a general hesitation on the part of their owners to not bring them to classes with other dogs, due to their unique characteristics (dog - on - dog aggression). This class is a place they can bring their dog and nobody will look sideways at the owner when the dog does what dogs do. That was never my problem; I took my shelter pit to every class I could sign her up for...that's how I met Amanda when we took her class.
I'd love to hear about your program.
Thanks for helping pits in Oregon.
