Is there anybody who lives in the DC area, interested in helping to organize a pit bull adoption event to take place the night of the Eagles-Redskins game on October 26? Please email kayachka@gmail.com

Yes, I believe it is October 24th. We have just started planning our PB Day here in the DC area. We have reserved space on the National Mall for the event.....however, if this doesnt work out, the event will be held in Richmond as it was last year.…
All-
I am currently fostering one of the pit bulls rescued from an "alleged" dog fighting ring in Virginia. This is truly sick that a DEPUTY SHERIFF had 20 pit bulls tied to chains in his backyard and NOBODY noticed?????
Please see the link below…
Proud owner of an 11 year old pit bull (and a cat, I have to mention him as well). I have worked for years rescuing abandoned/abused dogs, with a special fondness for pit bulls.
For me, the CGC is simple if you can keep your dogs attention on YOU. You have to show some basic obedience, like walking on a loose leash, and stopping at some point, and your dog must not try to pull you. There's also a sit, stay, and come.
I think the most difficult parts are the walking through a crowd and walking by a dog.
For the croud, make sure your dog doesn't veer away from you, pulling towards other people walking around. This can be especially hard for people LOVING dogs.
When walking past a "neutral" dog they call it, you and your dog at ur left side, will stand at one end of the room, and another owner will stand with their dog at their left side many feet away.(This is a CGC dog, not one taking the test.) You have to walk by, and your dog must not lunge towards the other dog, even if it is in a playful mannor. I can't remember if they make you stop, and shake hands. (We had to do this for our Therapy dog test)
If you do have to stop and shake hands, MAKE YOUR DOG SIT AND STAY. Give her a command so that she wont leave your side. This is not mandatory, but it give your more control of your dogs attention. If you dont have to stop, then just keep her attention on YOU. This was the hardest part of the Test for my lucky, becuase he just loves all other dogs!
Also, at the beginning they make sure your dog can accept friendly petting. So if you are nervous, your dog will be too! Try to ease your dogs nerves during this part of the test by saying, "oh, who's this!" or "Kaya, you want to say hello?" In a nice high chippery voice. Because you dont want her to pick up on your nerves, and think that the evaluater makes you nervous. I dont know your dog, but for mine, i was nervous, and he picked up on that and shut down, looking away in a shyfull mannor from the evaluator. This was on his Therapy dog test, and i know they are not as strict for the CGC.
Finally, the 3 min session when you leave your dog with the evaluator, and become out of site for your dog. Some dogs do fine, but mine hated it! I know they allow some whinning, and distress, but if too much, you won't pass. They also see if your dog will respond to commands while your away, like sit and down. They just dont want your dog pulling, or lunging towards where you walked, pacing around, becoming uncontrolable or becomming aggressive with you not around.
Just dont be nervous, and have fun with it! Make itlike a game, have fun, and your dog will do fine!
She is a freckle face, she looks like my Lola a little. I just love looking at every body's pictures so thank you to everybody that has put more than one on. I am computer illiterate so i have a hard time.
They are banned in Ontario , but there is a grandfather claus so pitters born before May 2006 or something like that are allowed to live but must be muzzled at all times and a few other BS rules.
Fortunatly Hank is a lab/pointer cross so the laws to BSL don't apply to us ;)
I just read your message below and I know what you're saying I'm so sick of trying to explain what wonderful dogs PBs are to ignorant idiots that think they're experts on the breed cus they saw a 2 min blurb on the news . Can anyone say FRUSTRATING?
I love the picture of your Bully cuddling with your cat it's too cute!
Thanks guys! I wanted to briefly share an experience I had recently- I volunteer every weekend with a local rescue group here in northern Virginia, and last week we had a litter of the cutest 8 week old lab/pit puppies.....We had one family interested in adopting, but the wife was literally obsessed with the fact that they were pit bull mixes.....she feared that in a few years the dog would just "snap" and attack her children. I explained to her the whole history of the breed, their numerous good traits, how good they are with kids, etc., but she would not believe me (fortunately we did not let her adopt from us). I am so sick of these people with their stereotypes! If I have to defend my dog one more time I think I'll snap.....but still, I understand that this is exactly what needs to be done in order to re-establish the once honorable reputation of the pit bull!
