I was born and raised in Miami, FL, where pit bulls are banned. I now live in Central Florida. I love animals, especially bully breeds. I hope one day more people will realize how special these dogs really are, especially pits. My dog Bella is my life and she has taught me a great deal. She is my best friend. She will be eight years old in 2009 and I hope I have many more years with her. I work as a misdemeanor Probation Officer, but would love to work with animals on some level one day. I really admire the work that therapy dogs do. Diane Jessup is one of my heroes ever since I read her book " The Dog Who Spoke with Gods."
Yeah, I keep in touch with Diane through thepitbull-place message board where she's an active member. I got in contact with her originally through serendipitous means on Ebay, believe it or not. She's been very supportive about the Demo book and very humble when I compliment the hell out of her and her writing
Hey you! You should start Bella on her way to doing Therapy Work. There are a few international groups that evaluate, but you have to find obedience classes on your own. The Therapy test point can be found here http://www.tdi-dog.org/tditesting.html and are just a beefed up version of the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test. PIt bull type dogs are accepted by all of the organizations. In fact, German Shepherds are the most common Therapy Dogs in my organization & since they were banned as "child eaters" in the 1970s, all breeds are welcome. Delta, Love on a Leash and Therapy Dogs Inc. are other organizations, but this one had an evaluator in my area. The test is $10 and if you don't get 100% you don't pass. Either way, it's just great training to reinforce dog manners.
