Disc Dogs

Hey everyone! I thought it might be fun to start a group on "Disc Doggin" in honor of Wallace being a National Champion. So if you're a seasoned pro or just want to get started we can use this group to share ideas and training tips.

wen i started GADGE on frisbee i had him sit facing me and would step back telling him to stay when i got about 5-6 feet away from him i would give the comand catch and toss it to him. I started with a soft rope and cloth style frisbee and when he would catch it every time i would move farther back. Then i had him sit next to me and would give the catch comand and let him take off befor i threw the disk affter a little while i could trow the disk as far is i could and he cought it almost every time

Natalie, I have only had 1 incident where Belle actually broke off a piece of a toenail and that was at a disc dog competition on some crappy old astroturf. Other than that I've had no issues with toenail problems.

My dog loves to play frisbee. I would love to hear some stories. Do any of you have problems with your disc dogs cracking their nails? My dog has cracked 4 now. Any suggestions?

Drop a frisbee = Penny the healer I play with would not drop a frisbee at first. I tried lots of stuff, but what has worked the best for her is to have another frisbee behind my back, when she gets where I want her to drop it I show her the other one and give her the drop command, I say drop and slap the side of my leg with the frisbee (not hard). I would then throw the second frisbee, so she "won" and got to chase a frisbee. It took a while but now she will drop it with the command and no frisbee. I think each dog is different you just have to find what works. I know some people have turned there back to the dog.and it worked. For me something positive like another frisbee works better.

I've started a discussion about getting started in Toss and Fetch here in the Disc Dog group. I thought that would be a good forum for questions and answers. So Jennifer, have a look at that and see if it helps. I'm sure some of the more experienced folks will chime in as well.

Also Welcome to Pat & Kris Bass!

Out of our 10 adults, we have two that we are going to start disc-ing. Sunny and Jet. Jet has a like 5ft vertical and is about 28 lbs. Sunny is one of our rescue dogs and was not treated well but she is sooo sweet and awesome! She loves interaction with people and to play. We got the "play yard" (it's huge) done and are starting to set up an obstacle course so we can get them out one or two at a time. I've had experience in show dogs but now am just wanting to do sporting competitions. I'll get more pix up and let everyone know our progress! Thanks Bat and Belle for creating this group!

Would it help any if I show her an example using the kids to catch? She sits when we play fetch and won't move until it hits the ground. Should I start having her fetch with a disc to help? And should I start with a smaller disc or regular size? I have read a zillion books that are really helpful but actual experienced people help a lot more! lol, thanks for the help Bat and Belle!

Hi and thanks for the invite. Stewie and I head out to Colorado for the big Challenge and my all time favorite comp "The Quad" in August. Congratulations to you and Belle on 2 more medals, awesome job. So great to hear more pibbles are getting into the sport. Keep up the great work. Kat & Stewie

Jennifer, pibbles are a natural at disc doggin'. If you want to get started the easiest thing to learn is "Toss and Fetch". If Rose will chase and catch the disc, then bring it back to you you've got half the battle won.

One thing that is very helpful from a "timing" aspect is teaching her how to go around you before the throw. So if you're right handed you'll want her to run from your right side, go behind you and then run down field from your left. This is a great way to get more distance because once she goes around she'll expect to see the disc already (or soon to be) flying through the air.
